What's an IT Architect?
Just as a Building Architect captures the customer's thoughts
concerning the
building's aesthetics and functionality, an IT Architect captures the customer's
thoughts concerning his business processes
and information requirements. An
excellent architect is more focused on capturing the customer's vision and needs
than merely the words that
he speaks. This enables him to continue to develop
the customer's vision and exercise creativity in his designs. This greatly
enhances the value of his services. The Building Architect's combination of
aesthetic and structural design skills is the key enabler that allows him to
envision workable possibilities that an artist or builder never could. The IT
Architect's combination of business skills and technology skills is the key
enabler that allows an IT Architect to envision workable possibilities that even
a business person and technician working together never could. While there are
parallels between these two, there are also paradoxes. Erecting a building
without a good plan from a Building Architect never crosses anyone's mind.
